Communication design – the art of visual communication

Communication design is all about visual communication. The realm of communication design is vast, ranging from advertising, packaging or print design to corporate and product communication, web, app and interface design as well as the design of games, films or sound design. In the Red Dot Shop you can order interesting books on the topics of graphic design and communication design online in an easy way in order to find out more about this form of design.

Communication design makes it possible to give a form to content and messages and to communicate them using visual means such as graphics, typography, illustration, photography, film or sound. It doesn’t matter in the least whether the information is clear and generally understandable, as is the case for pictograms for example, or involves subliminal messages such as those conveyed in advertising. There are lots of different ways and means of conveying news and information: the colours and forms chosen, the contents presented and the wording of statements .The type of design and many other factors can conceal messages or bring them to the fore.

Conveying information also always has an emotional component. Communication design speaks not only to our minds but also to our feelings and emotions. This aspect is used in a targeted manner in successful communication design to emphasise the message. By mixing aesthetics and contents, the message expressed is raised to another level while at the same time creating new opportunities for the observer to access the message.

Areas where communication design is used

When we hear the term “communication design”, many of us automatically think of advertising, poster design and similar areas. But communication design is used in numerous other fields.

One such field for communication design is the media, for example. In the case of TV channels, visual communication is everywhere – for example in the specific design of programmes and broadcasting formats, as is clearly explained in the book Broadcast Design from our online shop. Another important aspect is the design of a broadcasting channel as a brand. This already leads to points of contact with another area of communication design, namely corporate design. This fundamental component of design involves defining corporate identities using logos, creating recognition value, expanding an individual corporate structure and philosophy and much more. In brief, corporate design determines the image of a company in the public eye.

International Yearbook Communication Design – an overview of all trends

Everywhere we go, we encounter communication design – in the form of print media and websites, when we use our smartphones or sat nav devices or when we go shopping in the supermarket. The whole range of communication design and graphic design is presented in the two-volume International Yearbook Communication Design. Year after year, the yearbook introduces the most recent developments and trends in this design discipline – for a comprehensive overview and insight.
