The Red Dot Shop is the place to buy hand-picked design products

From design classics to stylish home accessories, this is where you will find products with high design quality. They have been selected for you on the basis of our decades of experience with exclusive design products as part of the Red Dot Design Award. Just relax and take a look around. All of the accessories, gadgets, home and lifestyle items for sale in the Red Dot Design Shop have been ordered into clear categories for you.

What is good design and what makes a product a design product?

How we decorate our home is above all else a matter of personal taste. Whether you prefer a modern or classical look, the style of a country house or a clear and puristic appearance or whether you like to use colour, a lot of wood or dramatic black and white contrasts – your home interior depends mainly on the environment that you feel comfortable in and can enjoying living or working in. Personal style is completely subjective and shaped by personal preferences, role models and ultimately also by the mood of the time. Anything that we like and that matches our style is good. This also applies to the furniture, lamps, home accessories or kitchen utensils, i.e. the products, that we surround ourselves with.

And yet not every attractively designed product is a design product. There are many everyday items that look nice and that may even sport the name of a well-known designer but that do not function well or can only be used after studying the operating instructions intensively. By contrast there are things and devices that are of high quality, stable and reliable but so unattractive that you would prefer to stow them away somewhere immediately after use.

Consequently, in order for products to be described as design products, they must combine a range of different aspects. Regardless of personal taste and style, there are in fact some objective criteria that help to decide whether an object is also a design product. These criteria, also used by the jury members for the Red Dot Award each year to assess thousands of products from all over the world, include the level of innovation of a product, its functionality and formal quality, or aspects such as durability and ecological compatibility.

Initially this all sounds very abstract. However, Professor Dr. Peter Zec, initiator of the Red Dot Design Award and author and publisher of numerous books on the topic of design, has summarised these requirements in an easy-to-understand manner as follows:

The four qualities of good design

1. Quality of function – does the product meet our expectations in terms of function?

2. Quality of seductiveness – does it have a feature or an element that is not geared primarily to use and utility but appeals more to our sense of enjoyment?

3. Quality of use – does the product do more than just function; is it also easy to operate and use?

4. Quality of responsibility – is the product environmentally friendly or does it have another socio-cultural component that gives it a certain added value and sustainability?

If a product combines these four characteristics, then it can justifiably be described as a design product.

These are precisely the type of well-designed products that we select out during our design competition, the Red Dot Award, from the flood of products launched on the market each year.

Design for every area of life
